Liquid Nitrogen Pipe Freezing Portsmouth

How did our Pipe Freezing Company Support Valve Installation at Airbus Portsmouth?

When essential heating pipework requires new valves, Facilities Managers need reliable isolation solutions that help minimise disruption. At Airbus Defence & Space in Portsmouth, Veolia UK required specialist support for valve installation on the building’s 200mm low-temperature hot water (LTHW) system.

Our experienced engineers attended the site outside normal working hours to complete two controlled pipeline freezing and install the valves supplied by Veolia UK. Using liquid nitrogen pipe freezing services, our team created temporary isolation points on the heating flow and return pipework.

Once our engineers established the required isolation, they installed the two new valves. This coordinated approach allowed our team to manage both the temporary pipe isolation and valve installation. The project demonstrates how specialist pipeline freezing can support planned maintenance within complex commercial and industrial facilities.

Why did Airbus Portsmouth Require Specialist Pipe Freezing Services?

The project required new valves on the existing 200mm LTHW flow and return pipework. Before installation could proceed, our engineers needed to establish suitable isolation points.

Conventional isolation methods can require extensive draining, particularly when suitable existing isolation valves are unavailable. Therefore, Veolia UK appointed us to provide specialist liquid nitrogen pipe isolation and complete the valve installation.

Additionally, the project required careful coordination between contractors. The boilers needed isolation before our attendance, while other contractors handled insulation removal and system reinstatement. By scheduling our work our of hours, the project team could coordinate the installation with the wider maintenance programme.

How Did Our Engineers Complete the 200mm Pipe Freeze and Valve Installation?

Our expert team followed a planned approach to create two temporary ice plugs and install the two new valves.

1. Preparing the Heating System

The project programme required the boilers to be isolated on Friday, ahead of our Sunday attendance. Other contractors removed the pipework insulation to provide access to the designated freezing locations. Our engineers then prepared the exposed 200mm flow and return pipes for the freezing process.

2. Applying Liquid Nitrogen Freeze Jackets

Our engineers positioned two specialist freeze jackets around the LTHW pipework. The team applied one jacket to the flow pipe and another to the return pipe. Next, our engineers used liquid nitrogen to cool the pipework and create controlled ice plugs. These temporary barriers provided the pipe isolation required for the valve installation.

3. Installing the New Valves

Once the ice plugs had formed and achieved the required isolation, our engineers proceeded with the valve installation. Veolia UK supplied the valves, and our experienced team completed the installation on the LTHW pipework. Throughout the process, our engineers maintained the temporary pipe freezes to support the installation works. By completing both stages, we provided a coordinated service covering pipe isolation and valve installation.

4. Thawing and Completing the Works

Following the valve installation, our engineers allowed the temporary pipe freezes to thaw. Our team then checked the pipework for leaks and cleared redundant materials from the work area. Other contractors took responsibility for reinstating the pipework insulation and boilers. Our engineers also arranged disposal of redundant materials through an appropriately licensed waste or recycling facility.

What Were the Benefits of Pipe Freezing and Valve Installation?

By combining liquid nitrogen pipe freezing with valve installation, our engineers provided a practical solution for current and future maintenance.

Key project benefits included:

  • Improved future maintenance: The new valves provide isolation points, allowing engineers to shut off relevant sections of the LTHW system for future maintenance.
  • Reduced disruption: Temporary pipe isolation helped limit the need for extensive system draining during valve installation.
  • One specialist contractor: We completed both the pipe freezing and valve installation, simplifying project coordination for Veolia UK.
  • Out-of-hours working: Our engineers attended on Sunday, helping minimise disruption to normal site operations.
  • Long-term operational benefits: The new valves give the Facilities Managers looking after the plant room, greater control over future heating system maintenance and repairs.

By installing permanent isolation valves, our team helped make future maintenance more manageable while supporting the site’s ongoing operational requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Pipe Freezing

Can you Freeze a 200mm Heating Pipe?

Specialist engineers can use liquid nitrogen pipe freezing on suitable 200mm heating pipework. However, they must assess pipe material, temperature, flow conditions and other technical requirements before proceeding.

Can Liquid Nitrogen Pipe Freezing Help Avoid Draining a Heating System?

Temporary pipe isolation will reduce the need to drain extensive sections of a heating system. The suitability of this method depends on the pipework arrangement and project conditions.

Can Your Engineers Install Valves as Well as Freeze Pipework?

We provide both specialist pipe freezing and valve installation services. At Airbus Portsmouth, our engineers created two temporary pipe isolations and installed the valves supplied by Veolia UK. This approach allows clients to appoint one specialist contractor for both activities.

How Does an ice Plug Isolate Pipework?

Liquid nitrogen cools the liquid inside the pipe until it forms a solid ice plug. The plug creates a temporary barrier that can isolate a suitable section of pipework. Specialist engineers monitor and maintain the freeze throughout the agreed isolation period.

Can Pipe Freezing Contractors Work Outside Normal Business Hours?

Our team will plan out-of-hours pipe freezing services, subject to availability and project requirements. This approach helps Facilities Managers / Building Managers coordinate essential maintenance around operational needs.

Do you Provide Pipe Freezing Services in Portsmouth and Hampshire?

IDWe Pipe Freezing supports commercial and industrial clients in Portsmouth, Southampton and across Hampshire. Our engineers also cover London, Kent, Surrey, Essex, East Sussex, West Sussex and beyond.

Is Pipe Freezing Suitable for Valve Replacement?

Pipe freezing can provide temporary isolation for valve replacement or installation on suitable water-filled pipework. Our engineers can complete both the pipe freezing and valve installation, depending on the project requirements. Before proceeding, our team assesses the system and agrees the isolation requirements with the client.
