Preparation and Access

Modifications were carried out during regular working hours, ensuring minimal disruption to The Savoy’s daily operations.

Key steps prior to works taking place included:

  • F G Mechanical Building Services Ltd installed scaffolding to access ceiling voids where the copper pipework was located
  • Hot water services were isolated by F G Mechanical ahead of the pipefreezing works

Hot Water Service Modifications (108mm Copper Pipework)

The focus of the project was on the 108mm hot water copper pipework. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:

  • Insulation removal: Firstly, the insulation material was removed around the 108mm copper pipework in preparation for our freezing services
  • Liquid nitrogen pipe freezing: Using liquid nitrogen and specialised freeze jackets, our team applied pipe freezing techniques to the hot water system. This ensured localised freezing of the pipes to form a freeze plug. Following on from this, it meant work could proceed without draining the entire system

Pipe cutting and valve installation:

  • The frozen section of the 108mm copper pipe was cut, and the water was drained locally
  • The team installed a fully lugged butterfly valves using bimetal flanges
  • A 108mm tee section, complete with a 15mm drain point, was installed to facilitate future maintenance

Thawing and leak testing:

Lastly, once the valve installation was complete, the team allowed the pipe to thaw, refilled the system, and conducted a comprehensive leak test. The pipe was then re-insulated, restoring the system’s functionality.

Cold Water Service Modifications (76mm Copper Pipework)

The same pipe freezing services were employed for the cold water service, focusing on the 76mm copper pipework.

  • Insulation removal: The existing insulation was removed, and the cold water service was isolated
  • Pipe freezing services: Using a freeze jacket and liquid nitrogen, the 76mm copper pipe was frozen at a targeted section, allowing localised work without shutting down the entire cold water system
  • Valve installation: The team cut into the frozen pipe and installed a 76mm ball lever valve with crimp male iron fittings.  Lastly, after the valve installation, the system was refilled, tested for leaks, and the pipe was re-insulated

Site Clearance

Upon completion of all pipework modifications, the site was cleared of redundant materials. Waste was responsibly disposed of at a licensed recycling facility, ensuring an environmentally friendly approach to the project.
