Battersea Hot Tapping Services Project

Why Were Additional Water Service Connections Required?
Our client required two new 25mm outlets on the existing 125mm water service at Palmerston Court in Battersea. These hot tap outlets would provide dedicated connection points for future pipework installations. However, the existing pipework formed part of a live water system, requiring a specialist approach to the modifications.
Rather than replacing the existing pipework section, the project team needed a way to introduce additional outlets. Our experienced hot tapping engineers assessed the work requirements and planned the installation within the sixth-floor riser. The proposed solution would retain the existing water service while providing the necessary connections for future use.
How did our Engineers Carry out the Live Pipework Modifications?
Our expert engineers attended Palmerston Court during normal working hours to undertake the agreed works. The installation involved several coordinated stages to create the new outlets and prepare them for future connections.
Pressure Testing the Existing Welds
Before commencing the drilling works, our engineers carried out a pressure test on existing welds completed by others. This test checked the integrity of the welds against the system’s operating pressure. Following a successful result, the team proceeded with the planned modifications.
Creating Two New Outlets on the Existing Water Service
Using specialist hot tapping equipment, our engineers installed a drilling rig onto the existing 125mm water service. The team then created two 25mm apertures within the pipework, providing the openings required for the new connections. Once drilling was complete, our engineers removed the rig and recovered the pipework sections created during the process.
Installing Valves for Future Connections
Next, the team installed 25mm BSP quarter-turn valves onto both new outlets. These valves provide dedicated control points for future pipework connections. Our engineers also fitted plugs or blanks to seal each outlet until the client requires them.
Completing the Installation
Finally, our team removed redundant materials and cleared the work area. They also arranged disposal of waste through a licensed refuse or recycling facility.

What Were the Results for Palmerston Court?
The completed works provided two additional connection points on the existing water service, ready for future use.
Key project benefits included:
- Future water connections: Two new 25mm outlets provide dedicated connection points for subsequent pipework installations.
- Existing infrastructure retained: The modifications avoided replacing the complete 125mm water service section.
- Dedicated valve control: Quarter-turn valves allow the client to manage each new outlet independently.
- Controlled installation: Pressure testing confirmed the integrity of existing welds before drilling commenced.
- Future-ready pipework: Sealed outlets provide practical connection points for the next stage of works.
What are the Benefits of Specialist Pipework Modifications for Facilities Managers?
For Facilities Managers, Property Managers and Main Contractors, adapting existing water services can present practical challenges. Traditional alterations may involve draining systems, removing pipework or coordinating extensive isolation procedures. However, live pipework tapping offers an alternative where the existing system and operating conditions permit.
Appointing an experienced hot tapping contractor can help project teams identify suitable options before work begins. This approach may reduce unnecessary pipework alterations while supporting future building upgrades. Furthermore, dedicated valves give maintenance teams greater control over new connections when they become operational.
For high rise residential developments and commercial buildings, careful planning can help minimise disruption and support efficient maintenance programmes.
