Our pipe freeze services enabled a safe 3-inch heating valve replacement at Whittington Hospital. Consequently, the client avoided draining the heating system and reduced disruption across the hospital.
Project: LTHW Replacement Double Regulating Valve (DRV) & Flange Adaptors
Client: Whittington Hospital NHS Trust
Location: Magdala Avenue, Islington, London N19
Service: Pipeline Freezing Services
Sector: Healthcare
Pipe Size: 3-inch LTHW heating pipework

How did our Pipe Freeze Services Support Heating Upgrades at Whittington Hospital?
Whittington Hospital required a planned replacement of a 3-inch double regulating valve (DRV) and two flange adaptors on its low temperature hot water (LTHW) heating system.
Draining a hospital heating system can create unnecessary disruption for patients, by increasing downtime and extending maintenance programmes. Therefore, the hospital required a safer and more efficient solution.
Our pipe freeze services created temporary isolation points within the live heating pipework. Consequently, engineers replaced the faulty components without draining the wider system.
What Challenge did the Existing Heating Pipework Present?
Hospitals rely on dependable heating systems every day. Therefore, maintenance work requires careful planning to minimise disruption. This project became necessary after a leak developed between the existing flange adaptors on the 3-inch LTHW heating pipework. The leaking connection required the replacement of the double regulating valve (DRV) and both flange adaptors to restore the system’s integrity.
Traditional isolation methods would have required draining and refilling significant sections of the heating network. Consequently, this approach would have increased downtime and extended the maintenance programme. Instead, our pipe freezing contractor services created two temporary ice plugs using liquid nitrogen pipe freezing. The frozen sections isolated only the affected pipework, allowing the replacement to proceed while the wider heating system remained intact.
How did our Pipe Freezing Contractor Services Complete the Project?
To help stop the leak, our engineers attended site during normal working hours following the client’s planned isolation of the heating system. First, we removed the existing insulation to expose the 3-inch heating pipework. Next, we installed two specialist freezing jackets around the pipe before carrying out two liquid nitrogen pipe freezes.
Once each pipe freeze had taken hold, the existing flange adaptors and double regulating valve were safely removed. Our team then inspected and cleaned the grooved pipe ends before installing two new Victaulic Flange adaptors and a new 3-inch Crane 931 DRV.
After completing the installation, we released both freezes, carefully checked the system for leaks and reinstated the insulation.
Finally, we returned the heating installation to normal operation before removing all redundant materials from site.

Why was Liquid Nitrogen Pipe Freezing the Best Solution?
Liquid nitrogen pipe freezing provided temporary isolation without draining the hospital’s wider heating system. As a result, the client avoided unnecessary water loss, lengthy refill times and additional commissioning work. Our cryogenic pipe freezing method also reduced disruption to planned maintenance while allowing engineers to complete the valve replacement efficiently.
For hospitals and other occupied buildings, pipework freezing often provides a faster and more practical alternative to traditional isolation methods.
What Were the Results for the Hospital?
The project achieved a successful outcome with minimal disruption to the hospital’s heating infrastructure. Our pipe freezing services enabled the safe replacement of the leaking double regulating valve (DRV) and flange adaptors without draining the wider heating system.
Following installation and comprehensive leak testing, the repaired pipework returned to service with the leak successfully resolved.
The client benefited from:
- No draining of the wider heating system
- Leak resolved through the replacement of the DRV and flange adaptors
- Reduced disruption during planned maintenance
- Safe temporary isolation using two ice plugs
- Efficient replacement of the 3-inch heating components
- Professional reinstatement of pipework insulation
- Thorough leak testing before recommissioning
- High-quality workmanship from a trusted specialist contractor

Frequently Asked Questions about Pipe Freezing Services
How do pipe freezing services help hospitals carry out maintenance?
Pipe freezing creates a temporary ice plug inside the pipe. Therefore, engineers can replace valves or fittings without draining the wider heating system. This approach helps reduce disruption and supports planned maintenance within occupied hospital buildings.
Why did Whittington Hospital choose liquid nitrogen pipe freezing?
Liquid nitrogen pipe freezing provided a safe and efficient way to isolate the 3-inch heating pipework. As a result, the valve replacement proceeded without draining the complete LTHW system, saving both time and unnecessary disruption.
What is an ice plug in pipe freezing?
An ice plug forms when liquid nitrogen freezes the water inside a section of pipework. This temporary barrier isolates the pipe so engineers can complete maintenance safely before restoring the system to normal operation.
Is pipe freezing better than draining a heating system?
In many situations, yes. A pipe freeze avoids draining, refilling and recommissioning large heating systems. Consequently, maintenance often takes less time while reducing water loss and disruption to the building.
Can pipe freezing services be used on hospital heating systems?
Pipe freezing services suit many hospital heating systems, including low temperature hot water (LTHW) installations. Our specialist engineers regularly support planned maintenance across healthcare environments where reliability remains essential.
What types of work can a pipe freezing contractor complete?
A specialist pipe freezing contractor can support valve replacements, pump replacements, flange installations, pipe alterations, equipment upgrades and planned maintenance. Pipework freezing creates temporary isolation without interrupting the wider system.
Is cryogenic pipe freezing safe?
Yes. Our experienced engineers use proven cryogenic pipe freezing methods alongside detailed risk assessments and established procedures. Every project follows strict health and safety standards to protect both the building and its occupants.
What pipe sizes can your pipe freezing company freeze?
Our pipe freezing company works on a wide range of pipe sizes across commercial and industrial systems. Whether you require a small pipe freeze or a large-diameter isolation, we can recommend the most suitable solution.
Do you provide pipe freezing services across London and the South East?
Yes. We deliver pipe freezing services throughout London, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex and Hampshire. Our engineers regularly support hospitals, schools, commercial buildings, industrial facilities and public sector organisations.
Why was pipe freezing the right solution for this Whittington Hospital project?
This project required the replacement of a 3-inch double regulating valve and two flange adaptors on a live LTHW heating system. Our liquid nitrogen pipe freezing services created two temporary ice plugs, allowing the client to complete the work without draining the wider heating network. As a result, the project progressed efficiently while reducing disruption across the hospital.
