Pipe Freeze to isolate in Surrey

Why did The National Archives Need Pipe Freezing Services?

The National Archives in Richmond preserves millions of the UK’s most important historical records. The facility depends on reliable building services to maintain carefully controlled internal environments and support daily operations.

A redundant plate heat exchanger left several dead legs connected to the live heating system. Those sections no longer served a purpose and required permanent removal by using liquid nitrogen pipe freezing technique. Works included:

  • Cryogenic pipe freezing
  • Ice plug creation
  • Isolation of live pipework
  • Dead leg removal
  • Pipe cutting and capping
  • On-site welding
  • Flange installation
  • Leak testing
  • Pipe insulation reinstatement

Traditional draining presented several challenges, including:

Draining the heating system would have removed a significant volume of water, increased labour and introduced the risk of air locks. Engineers would then need to refill, vent and rebalance the entire system before returning it to service. Our pipe freezing company provided a far more efficient solution.

Using liquid nitrogen pipe freezing, we isolated only the required pipe sections. This approach kept the heating system full while completing the modifications safely. The project demonstrated why many commercial clients choose a pipe freezing contractor instead of draining an entire system. To learn more, please read our guide.

Why was Pipe Freezing the Better Solution?

Every commercial building presents unique operational challenges. However, avoiding unnecessary disruption always remains a priority. The National Archives required essential maintenance without affecting the wider heating system. Therefore, our pipe freezing services offered the safest and most practical approach.

Instead of draining the entire installation, our engineers created temporary ice plugs inside selected pipework. The temporary isolation allowed live pipework modifications while the remainder of the system stayed full of water.

As a result, the client avoided:

  • Full system drain down
  • Air locks
  • Lengthy recommissioning
  • Additional labour
  • Extended downtime
  • Unnecessary water loss

This pipework freeze kept the project localised and reduced overall programme time.

What Challenges did This Industrial Pipe Freeze Project Present?

Although the physical work remained straightforward, careful planning ensured successful delivery. The National Archives stores nationally significant collections that require dependable building services throughout the year. Consequently, every activity needed careful coordination.

Our engineers scheduled works during both normal working hours and planned out-of-hours periods where required. Before work began, the boilers remained isolated long enough for the pipework temperature to reach ambient conditions. This preparation allowed safe cryogenic freezing using liquid nitrogen.

Access restrictions also required careful planning

Maywins Ltd provided access for the return pipework, while our team supplied additional access equipment for the flow pipework. Planning every stage beforehand allowed the installation to progress safely and efficiently.

Pipe Freeze to isolate

How did our Specialist Pipe Freezing Contractor Complete the Work?

Our experienced engineers first confirmed the existing isolation valves operated correctly. Next, the team removed sections of insulation before installing specialist freeze jackets onto the live pipework. Using liquid nitrogen pipe freezing, we created temporary ice plugs inside both the feed and expansion pipework and the flow pipework.

The frozen plugs safely isolated the water without draining the wider heating system. Once each pipe freeze fully formed, we drained only the small amount of surplus water trapped between the freeze points.

This approach kept water loss to an absolute minimum. Engineers then removed redundant sections of pipework before completing on-site welding. The team installed new PN16 blank flanges to permanently cap the redundant dead legs.

Following installation, we released each freeze gradually before carrying out comprehensive leak testing. Finally, we reinstated the insulation removed during the works and left the installation ready for the remaining strip-out works.

Throughout the project, our pipe freezing company maintained strict quality and safety standards.

Before and After the Pipe Freeze

Before

  • Redundant dead legs remained connected
  • Draining the full heating system appeared necessary
  • Air locks presented a significant risk
  • Recommissioning would increase project time
  • Building disruption remained likely

After

  • Redundant pipework safely isolated
  • Dead legs permanently capped
    Heating system remained full
  • No full drain down required
  • Air lock risk avoided
  • Localised works reduced disruption
  • Building services remained protected

What Results did our Industrial Pipe Freezing Deliver?

This project delivered significant operational benefits for both the client and the wider building. Our engineers avoided draining a substantial volume of heating water. The client avoided lengthy refilling, venting and balancing procedures.

The project remained focused only on the affected pipework. Building services returned to normal quickly after completion. Most importantly, The National Archives continued protecting its nationally important collections without unnecessary disruption.

Industrial Pipe Freeze Frequently Asked Questions

Can pipe freezing remove dead legs without draining a heating system?

Pipe freezing creates a temporary ice plug that isolates the affected pipework while keeping the wider system full.

What is liquid nitrogen pipe freezing?

Liquid nitrogen pipe freezing uses extremely low temperatures to freeze water inside a pipe and create a temporary isolation point – discover more, please read our guide.

Is cryogenic pipe freezing safe?

Specialist engineers carefully monitor every freeze using proven procedures and professional equipment.

Why choose pipe freezing instead of draining?

Pipe freezing avoids draining the complete system, reduces downtime, prevents air locks and shortens maintenance programmes.

Can commercial buildings use pipe freezing?

Commercial offices, hospitals, heritage buildings, government facilities and industrial sites regularly benefit from professional pipe freezing services.

How long does an ice plug last?

The duration depends on pipe size, water conditions and project requirements. Specialist engineers monitor every freeze throughout the works.
